How to Choose the Best Outdoor Sauna for Your Home

An outdoor sauna brings the warmth and relaxation of a luxury spa into your own backyard. Whether you're creating a peaceful garden escape or a complete outdoor wellness retreat, choosing the right sauna starts with understanding the available designs, heating options, installation requirements, and long-term durability. Review our blog for more details on the best outdoor saunas.

Outdoor Sauna Styles: Barrel, Cube & Cabin

Outdoor saunas come in several distinctive designs, each offering a different combination of aesthetics, interior space, and functionality.

• Barrel Saunas: Feature a rounded design with a compact footprint and distinctive Scandinavian-inspired appearance. Their curved construction can promote efficient air circulation, making them a popular choice for backyard wellness spaces.
• Cube Saunas: Offer a modern architectural appearance with clean lines, spacious interiors, and often expansive glass fronts. They're ideal for homeowners seeking a contemporary outdoor spa aesthetic.
• Cabin Saunas: Feature traditional rectangular construction with generous headroom and flexible bench layouts. Many provide additional interior space for families or homeowners who prefer a more spacious sauna experience.

The best outdoor sauna design depends on your available space, preferred style, seating comfort, and how you plan to use your sauna.

Traditional vs. Hybrid Outdoor Saunas

Choosing the right heating system is one of the most important decisions when purchasing an outdoor sauna.

• Traditional Outdoor Saunas: Use an electric or wood-burning heater to warm the surrounding air, typically reaching temperatures of 150°F–195°F. Compatible heaters allow water to be poured over heated stones to create bursts of steam for an authentic Finnish-style sauna experience.
• Hybrid Outdoor Saunas: Combine traditional sauna heating with infrared technology, offering multiple heat experiences in one cabin. Depending on the model, the heating systems may operate independently or offer additional combination settings.

Most outdoor saunas feature traditional heating, but hybrid options are available for homeowners who want additional flexibility.

Outdoor Sauna Installation & Electrical Requirements

Before purchasing an outdoor sauna, consider the installation location, foundation, electrical requirements, and access for delivery.

• Foundation: Outdoor saunas require a stable, level surface, such as a properly prepared concrete pad, paver patio, or structurally suitable deck.
• Electrical Requirements: Most electric outdoor sauna heaters require a dedicated 240V circuit. Confirm the heater's voltage, amperage, and wiring requirements before installation.
• Ventilation: Proper airflow is essential for a comfortable sauna experience. Follow the manufacturer's ventilation recommendations and installation clearances.
• Weather Protection: Choose a sauna specifically designed for outdoor installation, with suitable roofing, drainage, and exterior materials.
• Assembly & Delivery: Consider access for freight delivery, the sauna's assembled dimensions, and whether professional installation will be needed.

Planning these details in advance helps ensure your outdoor sauna is installed safely and performs as intended.

Outdoor Saunas are Designed to Stay Outside Year-Round

Outdoor saunas specifically designed for exterior installation can remain outside throughout the year, including during cold winters and hot summers.

Premium outdoor saunas often feature durable woods such as thermally modified spruce, cedar, or other weather-suitable materials, along with protective roofing and drainage features.

Regular maintenance, proper ventilation, and following the manufacturer's weather-protection recommendations will help preserve your sauna's appearance and performance for years to come.

Outdoor Sauna Size Considerations

Choosing the right outdoor sauna size depends on how many people will use it regularly, your available backyard space, and your preferred seating comfort.

• 2-Person Outdoor Saunas: Ideal for individuals and couples who want a compact backyard wellness retreat.
• 3–4 Person Outdoor Saunas: A versatile option for couples who appreciate additional room or occasionally share their sauna with friends and family.
• 5–6+ Person Outdoor Saunas: Best for larger households, entertaining, or homeowners creating a spacious luxury outdoor spa.

Remember that advertised capacity generally assumes seated occupants. If you enjoy stretching out or reclining, review the interior dimensions, bench lengths, and seating configuration before choosing your sauna.
